Wendy's Twitter Talk (Blog post #2)

 Wendy’s Twitter Account

The company I selected was Wendy’s fast food restaurant. Over the past couple years Wendy’s has been a relatively successful company, but what has gotten more people's attention is their use of social media, especially Twitter. Wendy’s might not be the most popular fast food restaurant compared to others like McDonalds or Burger King, but through Twitter Wendy’s has definitely surpassed those two with their social media presence and following. Whenever Wendy’s tweets immediately people are interacting with it, and commenting. Sometimes the tweet becomes so viral that it ends up being featured on the Twitter trending page.

Wendy’s value proposition from the start of their restaurant has always been serving quality food and doing the right thing for their customers. As a fast food restaurant Wendy’s has made it their mission to always be open with the people about their food.

Tweet 2,4,8:

One thing Wendy’s is known for is responding to their customers on Twitter, which usually ends up being some clever remark by their social media team or it ends up being somewhat of a roast on said person who tweets them. For example, one Twitter user @Arozhh tweeted “I want Wendy’s But My Girlfriends wants McDonald’s what do I do.” Wendy’s replied to the tweet saying “There are plenty of fish in the sea.” This reply by Wendy’s got 1000 likes in under an hour and definitely made lots of people laugh.

Another clever reply by Wendy’s was when the McDonald's social media team released a
tweet that featured a link but the link was no longer valid. McDonald’s tweeted “Black Friday **** Need copy and link****” in which Wendy’s replied with “When the tweets are as broken as the ice cream machine.” This tweet absolutely blew up and had over 750,000 likes and 287,000 retweets.

The last tweet I found which has to be the most clever one of them all is when twitter user @SalernoBailey tweeted to Wendy’s asking “Why’s your beef square” in which Wendy’s replied by saying “Because we don't cut corners.” This is a great response because one its funny and a good pun, but it also promotes openness about how Wendy’s is with their food.

I believe that Wendy’s message on social media is just somewhat of a joke and they are there just to be funny. By doing this it allows many people to interact with Wendy’s social media and now those possible customers have the thought of Wendy’s in the back of their mind. So whenever those people might not know what to eat, Wendy’s is going to come to mind first.

Wendy’s here isn't doing anything remarkable or super creative, but more or less using a small guerrilla marketing strategy. Using this strategy through twitter is great because of the crazy amount of people that are on the app daily. The one thing with Wendy’s twitter is that they usually don't get recognized as much for their actual marketing ideas or new plans, but instead for their funny tweets that come out on the daily. The one thing they do well with this social media strategy is that they bash on other fast food restaurants a lot, and loads of people see it and end up agreeing with Wendy’s most of the time. The biggest challenge Wendy’s faces with the social media marketing is that they don’t have as much money as the bigger fast food chains so staying super relevant all the time is hard for them, but that is why they stay so active on twitter so they can keep their customers engaged.

If I were in charge of the social media team at Wendy’s I would encourage the daily tweets because it allows Wendy’s to stay connected with their followers and customers. My biggest thing I would change though is to somehow encourage them to make more tweets involving our products while still incorporating the level of humor that they use now. Doing this might allow customers to get a better insight on the food, which at Wendy’s is one of their biggest things in being open to customers about the food they are getting.

The main thing I learned from this assignment is that as a successful company you need to have a strong social media presence these days, and it really doesn't matter how you do it as long as you stay connected. Wendy’s is a great example of this from their funny tweets to customers, or their tweets where they roast other fast food chains. Wendy’s is staying connected to their customers on social media and it is proving to work.
